How Much Does a Bathroom Remodel Cost?

Contractors often respond with the phrase; "It depends." But in numbers, small bathrooms usually cost from $4,000 to $12,000 while larger master bathrooms can range between $10,000 and $35,000. The size of the room, its style, the quality of materials used, and the expertise of the contractor's services (obviously, higher quality work costs more) are all factors that contribute to the overall price. So let's look more in detail, at what contributes to it.

Based on the price range that I mentioned above, the average cost is typically $8,000. However, this project proves that you can fit within as much as $1,000 if you know how to do it yourself. Installation and Labor Costs

Remodeling and Tile Surface Preparation, Waterproofing

Bathroom remodeling services include the following main phases:

  • Demolition - the old tile, tub, shower, and plumbing need to be removed. Depending on the job and condition of the existing structures, this could also include removing old, damaged, or rotted flooring or walls.
  • Preparation -reinforcement of floor, repair or building of walls, fitting the new plumbing as necessary, and installation of a shower pan. If a wet area or open shower is planned this would include installation of all the proper and waterproof Kerdi shower system products.
  • Installation - install new shower and tub as well as floor and wall tile. Install shower doors, dividers, and glass walls as required.
  • Plumbing to Code - install new drains, faucets, and fixtures.
  • Carpentry - depending on the project carpentry may be required to move walls, build half walls, or install some cabinetry.
  • Finishing Touches - add lighting or fans and paint the trim and walls as desired.

Typically, the work costs are estimated based on an hourly rate or a cost per square foot. For smaller projects, many contractors require a minimum fee.

The average contractors’ prices are as follows:

  • Hourly Rates for Tile Installation - depending on the location of the project and the quality of the professional contractor hourly rates for plumbing, carpentry, electrical, or tile work can range from $45 per hour to $80 per hour.
  • Cost per Sq. Ft. for Tile Installation - Tile installation contractors often calculate labor costs based on the cost per square foot. Different types of tile require different preparation and installation techniques. For example, a standard ceramic tile is easier to install than more advanced designs that have patterns, borders, medallions, or mosaics. Given these differences, tile installation can typically range from a low of about $4 to $8 per sq. ft. for ceramic tile to $10 or $20 per sq. ft. for natural stone tile or more complex tile designs.
  • Minimum Job Fee - many remodeling contractors and tile installers will charge a minimum job fee such as $500 or $750 for smaller jobs to make sure they are compensated for their time and cost.

Below you can also play with the tool that gives a rough estimate of a renovation cost based on the room size. Don't treat it as a final value, please. Take into account the information that we outlined above.
